GUWAHATI: The investigation into the multi- crores de-siltation scam in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has almost ground to a halt in recent times, with several accused in the matter remaining on the run.

While several suspects, being investigated by the police for their involvement in the scam, reportedly absconding and evading the law enforcement agencies, seven of the accused in the case earlier taken into custody are seeking anticipatory bail from the Gauhati High Court.

Five of the named accused has been identified as assistant engineers at GMC, according to official sources.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that the bail hearing of accused Mithu Agarwala and Archana Konwar is scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Mithu Agarwala is one of the partners in Dinsan Global Ventures, the firm involved in the de-siltation scam. The other accused seeking bail includes Deepak Taludar, Pradip Sharma, Babul Bora, Dibakar Mali and Tanmay Dutta.

Earlier, the nine persons arrested in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) de-siltation scam were produced in the Court of the Special Judge, Guwahati, which remanded them to judicial custody on October 26.

It may be recalled that the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell arrested GMC OSD Babulal Sarma, Executive Engineer and Swacchata Officer Ashif Ahmed, Executive Engineer (Division I) Shankar Medhi, Executive Engineer (Division-II) Ramakanta Saikia, Executive Engineer (Division-III) Alin Begum, Executive Engineer (Division-IV) Chittaranjan Dutta, Executive Engineer (Division-V) Hiranya Barman and M/s Dinsan Global Venture Pvt Ltd Director (contractor) Dinesh Jaiswal on October 21 and they were in police custody for five days. The investigators arrested chief accounts officer Abhimanyu Medhi from his Nalbari residence and brought him to Guwahati on October 22. He was also produced in court on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody.

The CM's Special Vigilance Cell suspects that two of the three accused evading arrest in the GMC de-siltation scam - GMC Chief Engineer Tasdiqur Rahman and Executive Engineer Simanta Jyoti Baruah - might have fled the State. Contractor Mithu Agarwal is also evading arrest.
